While we closed the doors of the Kenyan Lounge in Kals am Großglockner last weekend after a fantastic 9 weeks of running, our Kenyan athletes had another full weekend of competitions. Twelve runners competed in five different events in Austria and Italy. For most of them it was the last competition after a long season. In the next few days most of the athletes will fly back to Kenya to their families. Grateful for the successful holding of our summer running weeks they said goodbye with the following results in the competitions in Italy:

Trofeo Navego (🇮🇹) Berglauf – Weltcup
Vertical und Classic

Vertical Nasego
So steep that in some sections you have to help yourself with your arms – that’s how you can describe the Vertical Race last Saturday. The key data: over a distance of 4 km you have to overcome an exhausting 1000 m of altitude! Our Mountain Running World Cup Team with Joyce Muthoni NJERU, Geoffrey Gikuni NDUNGU and Timothy Kimutai KIRUI took up this challenge.
Nasego (situated between Lake Garda and Lago d’Iseo) is another stop on the WMRA Mountain Running World Cup series. There was another top finish for Joyce in this tough race on Saturday. Behind the winner Andrea MAYR and the world champion Grayson MURPHY from the USA, she finished in an excellent third place.
Timothy and Gikuni were unfortunately not able to fight for the podium in the Vertical. While Gikuni had to struggle with muscular problems, Timothy reached seventh place. Now it was time for the three of them to recover quickly and well before the classic distance in Nasego on the next day.

Trofeo Classic

Only 24 hours later the athletes faced the next no less difficult task on the mountain. On the half marathon distance, in Nasego 21,450m, 1330 hm were the challenge. The route from Casto to Famea again offered everything a World Cup-worthy trail run needs. “Flatter” uphill sections alternated with steep climbs and there was also a good 1000m of downhill. In the last third of the race there were about 600 m of ascent over 4 kilometres, before the terrain went steeply downhill again. Often it is exactly this section that decides the race.
As on the previous day and at all previous World Cup stations, the competition was very strong. In the women’s race, Joyce was again competing for a place on the podium. After a long and exhausting mountain season she fought bravely for third place but finally had to be satisfied with an excellent fourth place on this day behind Murphy, Mayr and the Italian Ghelfi. As the overall leader she was able to collect very important points for the World Cup ranking, Very well done!
Our two men also proved their fighter’s heart again. While Timothy was still in third position after the steepest uphill section, Gikuni was still in 6th position at this point, 4 km before the finish. As he has done many times this season he surprised us with a very strong finish and fought his way up to the fantastic fourth position. In the end Gikuni was only 5 seconds off the podium. Timothy couldn’t quite keep up his pace to the end and came a very good 6th in this strong field. Strong performance!

Marcialonga (🇮🇹)

Philimon Kipkorir MARITIM, Mathew SAMPERU, James Murithi MBURUGU, Kipkorir BIRIR and Ronah Nyaboke NYABOCHOA travelled to Val di Fiemme in Trentino  for the Marcialonga competition this weekend. While Philimon arrived from Kals, the other part of the group came from Varese for the competition.

The start in Monea is a 26 km oneway route via Predazzo to Cavalese. The first 23 km are flat to slightly sloping, but on the last three km there are still 140 m to climb up to Cavalese. Not an easy task to adjust the muscles to an uphill after many fast kilometres.
For Philimon and Mathew it was the full distance, the other three were registered for the mixed relay. In the relay competition no prize money was paid out but for the three athletes it was more about loosening up their legs after the difficult half marathon in Lugano the weekend before and a preparation for the next competition.

The race started at 9.30 a.m in perfect running conditions with 16° Celsius at the start. There were other Africans in the starting line-up. Right from the start, a leading group of 5 broke away from the rest of the field including James, who was the start runner of the relay team. After 8 km, James handed over to Birir who took over the second 10 km section of the relay in Predazzo. At Lago di Tesero they handed over to Ronah for the last time. At this 18Km mark Mathew was in the lead, along with Kenyan Tiongik, with Philimon running about 100m behind in third position.
On the ascent to Cavalese Mathew was able to pull away decisively and was rewarded with his second victory in a week with a 1 minute lead. Philimon ran to a safe third place. James, Birir and Ronah also secured victory in the mixed relay. Great day in Marcialonga! Congratulations!

Cortina – Dobbiaco (🇮🇹)

The 30 km classic from Cortina to Dobbiaco/Toblach is usually held in early summer and is already a permanent fixture in our race calendar, unless the pandemic throws a spanner in the works. So we were very happy that despite this year’s postponement to September, we were still able to participate with two runners. The last two athletes to leave our summer base for Cortina last Saturday after 9 weeks of running in Kals were Isaac Kipkemboi TOO and Evans Kiprop KIPTUM. For Isaac, his first season in the run2gether uniform had gone fantastically so far, he was able to maintain his good form throughout the weeks and is definitely one of our strongest runners at the moment.
The race day greeted the 2,500 participants at the early start at 8.00 am with autumnal fresh temperatures and lots of sunshine. From the start in Cortina (1.211m) the course went steadily in 14 km to the highest point at 1.530m and then downhill to the finish in Dobbiaco (1.210m). Isaac and Evans ran the climb to the Cimabanche Pass in a compact lead group of 5. Then Issac and another Kenyan tightened the pace and at km 18 Isaac was able to gain a small lead. With two kilometres to go he picked up the pace and crossed the finish line 3/4 minutes ahead of the Kenyan MAIYO. Evans also broke away from the remaining group of 3 and finished in a safe third place. Another top performance, congratulations!

In dem Bericht Großes Sommerfinale in Österreich – great summer final in Austria findest du die Zusammenfassung der Bewerbe, die unsere Athleten am gleichen Wochenende in Österreich bestritten haben.
In the report Großes Sommerfinale in Österreich – great summer final in Austria you will find a summary of the competitions our athletes took part during the same weekend in Austria.

ASANTE SANA!

We would like to thank all our helpers from the bottom of our hearts for their support so far. Even though the 2021 season did not have so many competitions for us due to the pandemic, there were still about 35 competitions in which our athletes have participated since June 2021. Without all the kilometres of travel and support services to/from the competitions, the private accommodations, the countless pick-up and drop-off services from air/train/bus stations, the regular Covid tests and the support of our athletes during their stays in Vienna, these participations would not have been possible. Behind these achievements are all volunteer members and run2gether friends in Austria, Germany, Switzerland and Italy who also play an important role in the excellent performances of our runners! ASANTE SANA!
