May seems to be a very exciting month for us in terms of sports. Last weekend, a large part of the international half and marathon elite were guests at the S7 Marathon organized by run2gether, and today the Olympic Games Pre-Trials in Nairobi ended with run2gether participation.
For the Kenyan association “Athletics Kenya” the pre-trials serve as elimination and preparation event for the actual trials in June. The period for the national qualification standards for Tokyo then ends in Kenya.
There were and are very few running competitions due to covid restriction in Africa as well. As the density of strong runners in Kenya is extremely high, nominations for the Kenyan national team for the Olympics, World Championships or African Championships are extremely coveted and accordingly difficult to achieve.
On today’s last pre-trial day at the Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi, Purity Kajuju GITONGA was the only run2gether athlete competing in the 5000m. The 25 year old Purity joined us in 2015 and actually showed her strengths in mountain running in the past years. She achieved many podium finishes in prestigious European mountain races.
In the past months Purity has trained a lot on the track and due to her good training performance she has recommended herself for the start over the 5000m at the Pre-Trials in Nairobi.
In a strong women’s field the race went exactly as planed for Purity today. For half of the 12 1/2 laps she stayed in the centre of the field and waited patiently until the group started to separate from 3500m. At the beginning of the last lap the winner of the heat Naomi CHEPNGENO (15:34.10) tightened the pace considerably, only third placed Sandra CHEBET (15:37.50) and Purity could keep up with the speed. About 300m before the finish Purity overtook Sandra and secured in a great finish in 15:36.01 the sensational second place overall and a new personal best.
We congratulate Purity from the bottom of our hearts and are very proud! Today’s performance is a big step forward and has recommended Purity for the Africa Championships! We are keeping our fingers crossed for a nomination in the Kenyan team!
A big thanks to the new and ambitious coaching team of Thomas OSANO, Peter Ndegwa NYAMBURA and Peter Mochere ANGWENY, who are providing our team with renewed spirit and vigor.
